School News Oct 2013

Thank you for all of your hard work at the Work Day last Saturday.  We had over 60 people together, which is the largest Work Day party that Park has ever had.  We got so much done and I hope that you all got to know each other a little bit more too. Rubbish

We cleared a lot of things at the Work Day – thank you to everyone who has already taken something – there is a bit more by the bins in the staff carpark.

We have our Open Day this Thursday, which includes the wonderful apple press.  We have so many apples all carefully packed away in newspaper by the children, in preparation for making some delicious juice.  We need lots of cakes and apple yummies for the café, and a team of people to help serve and tidy up.  Please see the sign-up sheet (coloured by Dylan) under the covered way.  We will have a song with the children at 3pm, followed by the café opening with soup and cake until 4.30pm.  Please welcome any visitors you see in a typical jolly Park way!

There is no school on Friday 20th October.

Parent View

Ofsted used to bring surveys to the school to find out what you thought of the school during their inspection. However, now that schools are given no notice of an inspection, and no time to collect surveys, parents and children are asked to give their views and complete an online “Point In Time” survey.  The links for the surveys are:

Paper copies of the pupil survey can be obtained by phoning 0300 123 1231 or emailing

Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes

For the last few years the children have made up shoe boxes, filled with small gifts from a carefully prepared list, to send to a girl or boy overseas.  The school meeting has said they would like to do this again, so with this News is a leaflet explaining what to do, a label to attach to your box and an “All about Me” activity sheet for your child to complete.   Please return filled boxes to school by Tuesday 12th November, or take them direct to Tone Up Totnes, Dartmouth Close, The Plains, Totnes by Monday 18th November.  We encourage the children to give some of their things away, instead of just buying new things. It’s a fun half-term project – enjoy!

Assessment and Progress of your child

Although teachers mainly assess children by observation and discussion, there are a couple of assessments done termly for Reading and Maths for children over five years of age.  These are carried out in a fun, non-stressful manner, which is beneficial to the child and to the teachers to aid planning.  If you would like to see these, please talk to your child’s class teacher.

Updating information – attached is the Parent Phone List, which has been updated as much as possible. If your contact details are incorrect, please let the office know as soon as possible.

Research with Plymouth University

Plymouth University is working on a research project about social justices within a privatised school system.  They have chosen Park to be part of this as we have aims and an ethos permeated by a strong commitment to equality. They will be developing a profile of the school from materials found in the public domain and will not be coming into school.  We like the fact that Park School not only supports the children and families at the school, but helps educators think about education, which may affect many more families.

Mark’s Class Dance

Mark’s class have been involved in a dance project over in the Dartington Space Studios, with a company called Devon Dance.  They are giving a performance on Tuesday 19th November at 10am (location to be confirmed), if you wanted to come across and see them.

Christmas Fair and Fundraising

Stephanie is looking to work out a system for making fundraising continuing to work well when she leaves us in July 2014.  Please look out for emails from her – and when you have read it, respond with a short message so she knows you have received it, or with a long message of how you want to help!

The next fundraiser is our Christmas Fair on 13th December.  Mark’s class will host the café and everyone helps to create a beautiful space.

Have a wonderful half term!

Best wishes,

Amanda Bellamy
