School News

I am looking forward to spending some time with you over the next 2 weeks.  Our Work Party Day is this Saturday 29 September 10-2.  This is a day when lots of jobs get done and is a great way to meet people.  It now also counts towards your contribution hours. We have quite a few decoration jobs to do if it’s raining!  Please come along to meet people and share lunch with us.  I don’t want the parking issue to put people off coming so some of the fundraising budget will be made available for work days in the form of petty cash.  Please ask a member of staff on the day if you need to use this.

I am afraid that we have had to cancel the Apple Press because of the severe lack of apples in Devon.  I have spoken to a number of people and the Apple Press organizers who have searched for local apples without any success.  They have put it down to a lack of bees and the fruit not setting.  I know that I am sad and disappointed about this however we will still have our Harvest Café together on 4 October 3-5.  The children will sing some songs and will talk to us about the charity that they have chosen to give the café money to this year.  Singing will start at 3.00 and the café will open at 3.15.  Please remember that children are parents’ responsibility during this event.

This term Mark’s class parents are the key organizers of the café so please can you sign up especially on your class door. Parents from all classes are encouraged to make an apple cake/tart/flapjack to contribute too.  Please sign up under the covered way.

Many of you know that we use themes to teach the curriculum.  This means that we have a theme (e.g. Space), which we use to make the maths, literacy, science and other subjects become more relevant for the child.  The children have been working hard on their themes already this term.  Ben’s class has been finding out about what lives in rainforests and around Dartington.  We went on an expedition on the Estate to look for creatures and spiders webs dripping with dew jewels.  They have been learning all about food chains and webs.  Mark’s class has been looking at Space and has also been telling each other pretty scary ghost stories.  The Early Years have enjoyed a few picnics in the big field this term and are beginning to notice the autumn changes around them.

Swimming

The older children have been walking down to the Pavilions in Totnes to go swimming.  The walks down past the river into town are so beautiful and I have seen some great diving and swimming, as well as a lot of laughter at the pool!

Next Step Applications

The deadline for applications for children transferring to secondary school in September 2013 is 31 October 2012 for online applications (or 18 October if you wish to submit a paper application via school).  If you are unable to make an on-line application and wish to submit a paper application please pop in to the office for the paperwork as soon as possible.

There are daily tours at King Edward VI Community College beginning Monday 24 September.  South Dartmoor Community College is having Open Days on 2, 5, 9 and 12 October from 9.15am – 11.45am and Thursday 18 October from 6pm.  Entry to Sands School and other non-state schools is by direct contact with the schools concerned.

Applications for local authority run Primary schools for next year’s rising 5s – children born between 1/9/08 and 31/8/09 open on 7 November at www.devon.gov.uk/admissionsonline and close on 15 January 2013. Places are offered to start in September but parents can choose to defer until the term of the child’s fifth birthday although applications must still be made before the closing date of 15 January.  Children attending a maintained school reception class full or part time will not be able to use the Early Years entitlement funding.  However if deferring school entry you need to make that clear to the school and then you can continue to get funding.

Nursery recommendations

You may have noticed that there are some leaflets on the hall table.  Please take a moment to fill one in, as it will help to publicize our school.

A parent recently read some of our policies and particularly liked our ‘Teaching and Learning’ one.  They asked me to remind you that that there is a parent folder in the lower section of the pigeonholes with various policies in if you want to read through them at any time.

Please could everyone remember to wash, dry and put away their cups and leave the kitchen beautiful!

Mandi who works in the Early Years on Fridays (and who is Martin ‘Artin’’s partner) has unfortunately had to have an operation which means that she has been off school for a while.  She may need ongoing medication and will be off school for a while longer.   If anyone would like to sign a card or make a donation towards some chocolates please talk to Bridie.

Attendance

In order to save teachers’ time and show them consideration please will you call the school as soon as possible if your child is not going to be in school for any reason.  Teachers are legally required to know why they are not at school.

Ofsted surveys for parents and pupils

Ofsted used to bring surveys to the school to find out what you thought of the school during their inspection.  However the school now has no notice of the inspection and no time to collect surveys.  Ofsted has asked schools to give parents and children ‘Point-in-time surveys’ between September 3 and 12 October 2012 to enable the inspection team to find out what you think about the school should they come in this academic year.  They plan to ask you to fill in this point-in-time survey every year.  The links for the two surveys are:

For pupils       http://surveys.ofsted.gov.uk/survey?token=5044d17d7b640

For parents    http://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk/

Please fill in before 12 October 2012.  Should you need a paper copy of the pupil survey please call 0300 123 1231 or email surveys@ofsted.gov.uk
